Review to the first Mediations-Biennale in Poznan
16.11.2008 - 14.12.2008 / Kunsthalle Faust
|
Below the title “Asian Gates” the Kunsthalle Faust presents an assortment of European and Asian artist whose works are representing the thematic focus, the east-west dialogue, of the 1. Mediation Biennale in Poznan.
The gate to the eastern world was, only a few decades ago, physically found at the Bosporus near Istanbul. The Gate as a border crossing into another world complied with the thought patterns of nationality and locally defined cultural identity.
In the 21st century, many of these borderlines are qualified and totally terminated, for the single mind as well as for whole countries, others came up. The new borders advanced into the virtual room of media events, but they have lost their outline during the fight about influence and information dominance because the internet shrunk the world to a global village. The new gate to the world, standing in a warm home permits “googling” around the world with a mouse click. Whole crews of disgusted minds leave their ancestral homeland through gateways to try their luck in the unknown, which does not seem to be strange any longer. The one gate to the east has become many Asian gates, wide open to all directions. In the shape of megacities expanding with lightning speed they have become interfaces for the global exchange of goods and cogitations.
So the title of the exhibition “Asian Gates”, establishes a formal relationship to the quick alteration even in contemporary art, which is more and more advanced to an international calibrated indicator for communication and innovation.
China, for example and many Chinese artists proceeded to the digital age within only the last decade. Nearly at the same time, new benchmarks and within them vocabularies of concept like “the new Central Europe” developed due to the eastern European expansion. The exhibition “Asian Gates” also wants to accommodate this facet artistically by presentation of eastern European positions.
The exhibition, curated by Tomasz Wendland, Gu Zhenging and me continues the east-west dialogue started at Poznan in this spirit at Hannover.
